SOBER LIVING

In many addiction treatment plans there is a transitional step between inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation and reintegrating the client back into their community. It’s not uncommon for those who complete an inpatient or residential addiction treatment program to feel unprepared for reentry into society. This is not an indicator of whether the addiction treatment program was successful or not. It is more just the individual not feeling quite confident enough to navigate their newly found sobriety on their own. Sober living environments provide the tools an addict needs to be able to continue on the path of long lasting sobriety. Sober living provides a slower transition back into the community. Clients will live in a sober living facility that will be used as a stepping stone between residential treatment and the post-treatment return home. These environments provide a stable, safe, and substance free living situation conducive to maintaining abstinence. Although the sober living phase of treatment is optional, it is highly recommend that clients participate in a sober living program.

Many addiction treatment plans recommend for an addict to transition into a sober living facility where they can receive structure, support, and learn accountability before returning to their everyday life. Part of the structure provided to residents in a sober living environment requires them to attend 12-step meetings, therapy sessions, participate in house meetings, take drug tests, and follow the household rules; such as doing chores and respecting curfew. Our facilities will meet the needs of our clients as they reintegrate back into the community through private or shared rooms, Wi-Fi, cable, fully stocked kitchens and paid in full utilities. Sober living environments provide much more to the patient then half way houses or transitional living environments. This provides those who are adjusting to sobriety with a safe environment in which to begin recovery free from the temptations, triggers, and other contributors that many addicts would be confronting if they continued to live at home during this fragile time. Many sober living facilities allow their patients to stay for up to 12 months. They are designed to reinforce each client’s recovery by allowing them to live in a structured sober environment. Sober living is an important aspect of the full addiction treatment spectrum. It allows each person to focus on their recovery while almost eliminating chances of relapses while living at the facility.

When clients are consumed by their addiction they lose many of the life skills that helped them participate in the real world. Other times individuals never learned any of these day to day skills in the first place. In full blown addiction individuals neglect their responsibilities and obligations. Once in recovery they need time to relearn the many life skills that they lost while in active addiction. It can seem tremendously overwhelming to return back to their previously daily lives after completing treatment. It can be intimidating and down-right frightening to those who don’t feel completely confident in their newly found sobriety. Sober living facilities make the transition more seamless for those who are coming out of a treatment program and are not quite ready to live on their own yet. They provide a newly recovered individual with a stepping stone between the two.
While living in a sober living facility individuals will learn, or relearn, how to take care of themselves and strengthen their sobriety before they will be out in the world on their own.

They will learn these traits through being responsible for chores, self-care, and having to follow structured rules within sober living. There is more freedom while staying at a sober living home then when attending an inpatient residential treatment center. Even though there is less supervision, clients are still expected to adhere to the house rules. During their stay at a sober living home clients will be able to make future housing arrangements, work on repairing relationships with their family members, and find a stable job they can attend. It is important that clients find gainful employment because they will be expected to pay rent and living expenses. This is all part of the transitional learning experience. The overall goal of sober living is to make sure clients are confident in their recovery and ready to be responsible, productive, sober members of the community. Sober living provides an environment that has been shown to improve the rate at which people struggling with addiction are able to sustain their recovery.

The sober living phase of recovery relies heavily on the influence of peer support. The friendships and the ability to relate to other people in recovery will help clients sustain their new found sobriety. Sober living is the final step in the addiction treatment process before full reintegration into society. All the new and like-minded friends that clients will meet throughout their recovery will be a powerful force in the success of their sobriety. This will open the door for lifelong friendships and a new community of relatable people. For the duration of each client’s sober living phase and beyond, he or she will have the opportunity to participate in regular alumni events and gatherings. While attending alumni meetings and social gatherings clients are able to hear personal stories from former clients who have successfully maintained their sobriety. It is encouraging and provides hope to hear of others who went through the same struggles that are currently plaguing your own self. Listening to these stories will foster hope within the newly recovered clients. The hope is that they can pull strength and motivation to maintain their sobriety.
